Vocal Chords is a new series for RTÉ Lyric FM which takes presenter Iarla Ó Lionáird on a musical odyssey to discover the global phenomenon on the human voice as well as asking the simple but vital questions - why do we sing and what happens when we do? The series will start on RTÉ Lyric fm on Friday 1st May 2015 but a one hour special, a musical conversation with singer Peter Gabriel airs on December 26th at 7p.m.
In this first music and speech documentary from the Vocal Chords team Iarla Ó Lionáird and recordist Michael Gallen visit the acclaimed singer and song-writer Peter Gabriel at his home and studio in London to talk about Gabriel’s own vocal journey and ask what singing means to him. In an diverse conversation Gabriel shares his favourite music, from the Beatles’ ‘Love me do’ and songs of the “Pakistani Pavarotti”, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan to his key musical influences including Otis Redding and Nina Simone.
Peter Gabriel is best known both as the former lead vocalist for the British rock band Genesis and in his own very successful solo career with hits like ‘Sledgehammer’ and ‘Solsbury Hill’. He co-founded the WOMAD festival in 1982 and has since been dedicated to producing and promoting world music and artists through his label, Real World Records.
