Athena Media launches Joyce's Dublin podcast series

Thu 17 Dec 2009 by Athena Media

A series of six audio podcasts entitled 'Joyce's Dublin: an exploration of The Dead', presented by leading Irish actor Barry McGovern, have been created and released by UCD's IVRLA initiative.

The series, and a sister microsite, showcase Joyce's work and highlight the Joyce collections in the archives of UCD, the National Library and the National Archive. The audio podcasts explore themes in Joyce's evocative short story 'The Dead', which closes his collection Dubliners (1914), and contain interviews from leading Joycean scholars at UCD including Professors Declan Kiberd, Anne Fogarty, Gerardine Meaney, Harry White, Mary Daly and Dr Luca Crispi. The series is available through Joycesdublin.ie and can be accessed through the UCD site.

The series, and accompanying website, has been created by Athena Media, a digital media company led by UCD graduate Helen Shaw. It was commissioned by the Irish Virtual Research Library and Archive (IVRLA) which has been funded by the Higher Education Authority (HEA) through the Programme for Research in Third-Level Institutions (PRTLI). The project was originated by Professor Gerardine Meaney , Professor of Cultural Studies, and Vice-Principal for Research and Innovation in the College of Arts and Celtic Studies, UCD.

As well as showcasing the UCD digital archive initiative the series highlights the Joyce collections in the National Library and explores what the National Archives census returns of 1901 and 1911 tell us about Joyce and his family. One edition deals with the music of 'The Dead' and looks at the ways in which song is used in the story with some examples coming from the UCD folklore collection. The project is intended to provide students of Joyce with online tools which can illuminate and educate. The final podcast is a walking tour of Dublin narrated by Barry McGovern which traces a map from 15 Usher's Island, the house where the story is set, along the river to the Gresham Hotel on O'Connell Street where the story concluded. The microsite 'Joyce's Dublin' which displays the audio podcast series also provides access to audio-visual content relating to the story, including a photo gallery with images of Dublin in 1904 and a collection of highlights from the archives including songs, maps and original documents like the national census reports for the Joyce family.
