Case Study - National Consumer Agency
Project: Public awareness podcast: How to Avoid Scams released April 1 2007.
National Consumer Agency in Ireland commissioned Athena Media to provide an innovative online content solution for its anti-scams campaign in April 2007. Athena Media scripted a lively talk radio show with presenter Dusty Rhodes and created a fast moving show highlighting the top ten scams in Ireland. Reporter Anita Walsh talks to the public for a vox pop of views and we interviewed NCA CEO Ann Fitzgerald to get some tips on how to spot and avoid scams. The podcast was produced by Athena Media's Helen Shaw at Digital Audio Production studios in Merrion Row and we created two lengths, five minutes and ten minutes, from the audio content.
The podcast has been distributed through the agency's consumer website consumerconnect.ie and Athena Media also suggested that the campaign would be augmented by creating a CD quality edition and burning it to CDs and releasing to radio stations across the country with the agency's campaign press release. Athena Media also suggested releasing the podcast to iTunes and created an iTunes entry for the podcast and hosted it directly so that it could track for the client the number of downloads through iTunes and www.podcastingireland.ie.
By the end of April the podcast had been download over a thousand time though iTunes alone and was number 2 in the government category of iTunes under President Bush's weekly address. The traffic to the agency's own website and downloads from that sites and other consumer sites added several more thousands to the downloads. Equally some radio stations who released the CD releases used it directly on their stations.
The project was hailed by the Sunday Business Post on April 29 as the first of its kind in Ireland showing the innovative and cost effective use quality online content can make to public advocacy and awareness campaigns.
