Project: Radio programming
Currently Athena Media has produced Bright Sparks an 8 part science series for RTÉ Radio 1. Bright Sparks is presented by Dr. Shane Bergin. The series explores Ireland's rise in science, the men and women behind it, and the often breath-taking projects of innovation, discovery and invention that they are spearheading. In 2010 Athena Media won an independent production contract to deliver a series 'Home Grown' into the daily primetime programme, Today with Pat Kenny. The series ran for 13 weeks and in 2011 a new commission, this time supported by the BAI Sound & Vision Scheme, produced a series called 'Made in Ireland'which runs until the end of 2011.
In addition Athena Media achieved a further independent commission for a series 'Death of an Empire' the story behind the fall of the Soviet Union, which is presented by Seamus Martin. In April 2012 Athena Media was commissioned by RTÉ Radio 1 to produce a new radio series 'The Media Show'. 'The Media Show' is presented by Brenda Power and produced by Helen Shaw with the mission to demystify how the media works, to get behind media stories in broadcasting, print and online and to show how our daily media diet is shaped. The series ran for 8 weeks on RTÉ Radio 1 from 14th April until 2nd June. To listen back to the series click here
In April 2013, Athena Media was re-commissioned by RTÉ to produce series two of 'The Media Show'. The series aired for eight weeks from 6th April until 25th May. The series was again presented by Brenda Power gets inside the media world both in Ireland and across the world discussing topics such as regulating social media and how the new public broadcasting charge will work. Athena Media produced two radio series for RTÉ Radio 1 in 2013 which were both supported through the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland. 'Citizens: Lockout 1913' is a history series celebrating the centenary of the Dublin Lockout. 'Herosongs' is an eight part radio series focusing on the different ways male and female heroes have been represented in traditional Irish song throughout the ages. The series is presented by doctoral researcher in this field, Therese McIntyre.
Athena Media produced Jack Frost! A Christmas eve special airing from 8-9 pm on RTÉ Radio 1. Jack Frost! is presented by Jack Lukeman and delivers a mix of music and christmas stories, Jack is joined by Camille O'Sullivan, Julie Feeney, Aoife Scott and Michael Gallen as they perform a range of Christmas classics.
