Tower Songs in memory of Rose Shaw

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

In the last few weeks as we followed the closing stages of our Tower Songs - a song cycle for Ballymun radio project - my mother Rose fell ill at the care centre where she lived, just a stone’s throw from the Ballymun skyline. In the snow falls of the performance night she seemed tired and eager to sleep. She had suffered from vascular dementia for some years which had gradually stripped away her ability to speak. The old fragments of song lines from her past had become the one way to communicate as we sang the lines back and forth until she could do no more than whisper them. On Tuesday as we started the final edits of the documentary she passed away. We humbly dedicate the documentary which goes out on RTE Lyric FM this Valentines Day at 5.30 to her memory and to the ability of music to keep heart lines connected. May our beloved Rose rest in peace

Tower Songs triumph for Ballymun

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

Despite the snow it was an over full house and a breath-taking performance by Ballymun choir and music groups - along with the RTE musicians and Cor na nOg. Full praise to Daire, Darren (the teenage lyricists) Daragh O Toole the adult composer and especially Ron Cooney the music teacher who has inspired years of young musicians from Ballymun through the music project. Tune in for the show next week on the 14th at 5.30pm - see rte.ie for more details.
