Athena Media, now one of Ireland’s innovative content creators for TV, radio and online, celebrates five years in business this month. Athena Media was born September 2003 and moved into the Digital Hub digital media cluster in May 2004 and its been home ever since. The company has become well known for its digital media work, consultancy and content creation and includes the Dept of Communications, Justice and Foreign Affairs amongst its client base in its first five year. Athena Media makes broadcasting content for RTE Radio and TV, BBC, Newstalk 206, Setanta Ireland and its corporate clients include ComReg, IBEC, Vhi, 02, Murray Consultants, AMAS, the National Consumers Agency, the Crisis Pregnancy Agency and Calyx. The company has provided digital media future thinking for a range of global clients including RTE News and Current Affairs, EBU (European Broadcasting Union), SABC (South Africa), VRT (Belgium) and Danish Media. The company runs podcastingireland.ie and its podcast channels including 02 Making Waves and Vhi Health Club. The company’s recent achievements include an 8 part TV documentary series for Setanta Ireland ‘Winning Women’ and a six part radio documentary series for RTE Lyric FM ‘women and words’ - both projects were awarded grants from BCI Sound and Vision Scheme. Athena Media is unusual in successfully bidding for grants in both TV and radio under Sound and Vision. The company is currently completing a major series on urban development for Newstalk 106 and its creative documentary ‘The Last Wake’ - on the changing traditions of death and dying in Ireland has just been repeated by Newstalk 106 in a showcase documentary week. Athena Media’s weekly music channel 02 Making Waves is now in its third year and has over 500 unique users every day - the site itself has over 300,000 hits a month. With the company how entering its sixth year new commissions include new radio with BBC World Service and the company is currently completing a 10 part series on young people and mental health called ‘Is it Just Me?’ for RTE 2. Corporate podcasting is growing all the time as part of the company’s activities and new projects with both public and private clients are developing every month. In September Athena Media’s founder Helen Shaw will present on digital radio research at the EBU’s annual digital radio confernence, this time in Sardinia, and Athena Media in collaboration with research colleague Dr Brian O Neill has just won a digital media research project with the BCI.
